About Iyengar Yoga

BKS Iyengar developed a system of practising the asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control) which is characterised by its emphasis on correct alignment, sequencing of postures, safety and progression.

Asana is meditation in action. In Iyengar Yoga, with its emphasis on alignment and precision, the mind is completely focussed on the asana. We learn to bring our intelligence and awareness to every part of the body, in order to bring balance, stability and freedom in the asana. In so doing, we learn to be fully aware and in the present.

Yoga is for everyone. BKS Iyengar made yoga accessible to all, pioneering the use of props, such as blocks, belts and chairs, so that students of all abilities are able to overcome their difficulties and realise their potential.
